TSUBUTSUMI
Between you and me is a vast sea of infinite grains.
Right now, right in front of us.
This body, with its new cells daily repeating their cycle of life and death,
is no different to this world in which infinite grains multiply constantly.
In this world we are all grains.
You, me, dogs and cats, forests and cities and oceans.
With no boundaries between heavens and earth.
This series, Tsubutsumi / 粒神, perceives all subjects — including myself as the photographer — as drifting particles, and uses the prints themselves to express this perspective.
The prints extend the darkroom process by creating an effect in which the particles seem to glow.
My photographic practice focuses on very small things — particles and grains.
I imagined that even these tiny particles might possess a spirit, and I coined the word Tsubutsumi to describe this idea.
The title was inspired by the Japanese words Wadatsumi / 海神 and Yamatsumi / 山神.
Wadatsumi refers to a sea god, a sea spirit, or even the sea itself, while Yamatsumi means a mountain god or spirit.
All photographs are first printed in the darkroom and then rephotographed through Japanese shoji paper.
Natural light from the window makes the prints appear translucent, highlighting the texture of the particles from behind.
The Tsubutsumi series was first presented in 2016 as part of the “Next Project” at the Higashikawa International Photography Festival.
Tsubutsumi continues to be an ongoing body of work, evolving while exploring a more animistic worldview.
＊Shoji sliding doors, used for inside partitions, consist of translucent washi paper, stretched across thin horizontal and vertical cross pieces set in a wooden frame. My old home in Nara, letting in natural sunlight from the garden, allowed for that brightening effect through the shoji.

粒神
私とあなたの間には粒子の海が広がっている。
今、目の前に。
毎日新しい細胞の生き死にが繰り広げられているこの体と、
無数の粒子が増殖し続けるこの世界は何ら変わりない。
この世界でみんな粒子なのだ。
あなたと私、犬と猫、森や街、そして海も。
天と地の間に境界などない。
「粒神/Tsubutsumi」という言葉は、「海神/ワダツミ」と「山神/ヤマツミ」という日本語に触発されて作った造語です。
「海神」は海の神、海の精霊、あるいは海そのものを指し、「山神」は山の神や精霊を意味します。
私の写真表現は、とても小さなもの、粒子や粒に焦点を当てています。
こうした粒子にも独自の神や精霊が宿っているかもしれないと考え、それを「Tsubutsumi」と名付けました。
これらの写真は、まず暗室で印画紙にプリントし、その後、できあがったプリントを縁側の障子を利用してデジタルカメラで再撮影をしています。
自宅の窓から差し込む自然光によってプリントが透けて見え、その粒子感が際立つような効果を狙いました。
粒神（Tsubutsumi） のシリーズは、2016年の東川国際写真フェスティバル「ネクストプロジェクト」で初めて発表されました。
それ以来、年月を経て、他のシリーズを行き来しながら、粒神 はよりアニミズム的な世界観を探求するシリーズとして発展し、
現在も制作を続けています。
このシリーズでは、全ての被写体、撮影する私自身をも漂う粒子として捉え、プリント自体もその世界観を探求する手段として用いています。
